Vietnam is scheduled to host the 13th ASEAN School Games (ASG) in August 2023, according to a decision signed by Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam on December 28, VNA reported.
The first ASEAN School Games was held in Vietnam in 2013. Photo: baochinhphu.vnThe hosting of the ASG is being rotated among ASEAN member countries. 11 countries in Southeast Asia will participate in the event, which will take place in the central city of Da Nang and have no more than six sports.
The Ministry of Education and Training was tasked with making decisions on the time of the Games and the sports to be competed.
The steering committee for preparing for and organising the Games will include officials of the Ministry of Education and Training, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Planning and Investment, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Information and Communications, the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee, and the Da Nang People’s Committee.
ASEAN School Games (also known as the Youth SEA Games) is an annual games for secondary schools student athletes in ASEAN and organised under the authority of the ASEAN Schools Sports Council (ASSC).
The ASSC is an apolitical regional sports council that aims to enhance friendship among students around the Southeast Asian region. It also seeks to promote ASEAN solidarity among the youth through school sports and provide opportunities for school athletes to engage in cultural exchange.
Prior to 2009, the games were played based on satellite, single sports events. This was changed in 2009, where a games format was implemented. The first ASG planned under the new games format was hosted by Thailand in 2009, while the second, third and fourth ASG were hosted by Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, respectively.

In that year's edition, the athletes competed in nine sports including sepatakraw, badminton, volleyball, basketball, table tennis, athletics, swimming, gymnastics, and pencak silt - a martial art of Indonesia.
The host Vietnam sent 248 athletes to take part in all nine sports of the event. Other participant nations were Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Brunei, the Philippines, and Laos.
At 2019 Games in Indonesia, Vietnam finished fifth with 8 golds. Top three were Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia, respectively.
